DescriptionService of the Royal Hours - Great Friday -- Annunciation, Toronto, 2014.JPG
English: Vigil during the Service of the Royal Hours (Greek: Ακολουθία των Μεγάλων Ωρών) on Great and Holy Friday, the "Pascha of the Cross", during which all of the Hours — 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th, as well as the Typical Psalms — are sung as one service. The priest is chanting the following famous Byzantine antiphon:
"Today is hung upon the Cross, He who suspended the Earth amid the waters. (three times)
A crown of thorns crowns Him, Who is the King of Angels.
He Who wrapped the Heavens in clouds, is clothed with the purple of mockery.
He who freed Adam in the Jordan, is slapped in the face.
He was transfixed with nails, Who is the Bridegroom of the Church.
He was pierced with a spear, Who is the Son of the Virgin
We venerate Your Passion, O Christ (three times)
Show us also Your glorious Resurrection."
