English: The Crucifixion in the middle of the 17th century, 26x41cm. Georgios Margazinis "[O]PUS GEORGII MARGAZI[N..]" Inspired by Flemish engraver Jan Sadeler I, the painter has composed a realistic sequence of the events of the Crucifixion on several levels. On the first level the cross is on the ground and a soldier nails Christ's feet while another prepares to raise the cross. Further back is depicted the crowd of the Sanhedrin, mounted soldiers and princes. In the center is represented the large cross with the Crucified Christ, flanked by the crosses of the two robbers. Magdalene is kneeling at his base, embracing him with her arms, next to him is depicted the division of clothes and further back the Virgin Mary with the women, John and the crowd watching. In the background is represented Jerusalem on a small scale, shrouded in darkness.

Ο ζωγράφος εμπνευσμένος από δυτικές χαλκογραφίες έχει συνθέσει μία ρεαλιστική διαδοχή των γεγονότων της Σταύρωσης σε διάφορα επίπεδα. Στο πρώτο επίπεδο ο σταυρός βρίσκεται στο έδαφος και ένας στρατιώτης καρφώνει τα πέλματα του Χριστού, ενώ ένας άλλος ετοιμάζει την ανύψωση του σταυρού. Πιο πίσω εικονίζεται το πλήθος των Σανχεντρίν, έφιπποι στρατιώτες και άρχοντες. Στο κέντρο παριστάνεται ο μεγάλος σταυρός με τον Εσταυρωμένο Χριστό, που πλαισιώνεται από τους σταυρούς των δύο ληστών. Η Μαγδαληνή γονατισμένη στη βάση του, τον αγκαλιάζει με τα χέρια της, δίπλα εικονίζεται ο διαμερισμός των ιματίων και πιο πίσω η Παναγία με τις γυναίκες, ο Ιωάννης και το πλήθος που παρακολουθεί. Στο βάθος παριστάνεται η Ιερουσαλήμ σε μικρή κλίμακα, τυλιγμένη στο σκοτάδι. |
