Detail of the pediment sculptural group known as Apotheosis of Democracy, which stands over the east entrace to the United States House of Representatives at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The sculpture was designed by Paul Wayland Bartlett between 1911 and 1914. It was carved in white marble from Georgia by the Piccirilli Brothers of New York City in from 1914 to 1916. it was unveiled on August 2, 1916.
This detail shows the central group of figures, "Peace Protecting Genius". The central figure of Peace depicts an armed woman whose robe covers her breastplate and coat of mail. She stands in front of an olive tree, which is a symbol of peace. Her right arm gestures protectively over the Genius. Genius is depicted as a winged young man who and holds torch. The torch symbolizes immortality.
Not visible here, Industry (to the left) and Agriculture (only a small portion of which is visible to the right) depict the sources of wealth in America. Waves in the far corners represent the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
