In Arabic, Jerusalem is most commonly known as {{lang|ar|القُدس}}, transliterated as ''al-Quds'' and meaning "the holy" or "the holy sanctuary",<ref name=Bosworth/><ref name=DeGarmo/> cognate with {{lang-he|הקדש|ha-qodesh}}. The name is possibly a shortened form of {{lang|ar|مدينة القُدس}} ''Madīnat al-Quds'' "city of the holy sanctuary" after the Hebrew nickname with the same meaning, ''Ir ha-Qodesh'' ({{lang|he|עיר הקדש}}).
