The gunman, whom the police [[SWAT team]] shot to death, was identified as 29-year-old [[Omar Mateen|Omar Mir Seddique Mateen]], an American security guard. The act of terrorism was both the deadliest [[mass shooting]] in modern United States history at the time and one of the deadliest mass shootings perpetrated by a single person in recorded world history.
