On 17 November 1997, a splinter group of the [[al-Jama'a al-Islamiyya]], an Egyptian [[Islamist]] organization, carried out the [[Luxor massacre]] where 62 people were killed. On 29 December 2017 in Cairo, [[Attack on Saint Menas church|a gunman opened fire at the Coptic Orthodox Church of Saint Menas]] and a nearby shop owned by a Coptic man.
