The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census|racial makeup]] of the city was 94.95% White, 3.09% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.28% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.

There were 792 households, out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
