Kennedy's body was brought back to Washington. On November&nbsp;23, six military pallbearers carried the flag-draped coffin into the [[East Room|East Room of the White House]], where he lay in repose for 24&nbsp;hours.<ref>{{harvnb|Associated Press|1963|pp=36&ndash;37, 56&ndash;57, 68}}</ref><ref>{{harvnb|The New York Times|2003|pp=197–201}}</ref> Then, the coffin was carried on a horse-drawn [[Limbers and caissons|caisson]] to the Capitol to lie in state.
