Mother's Day in [[Italy]] was celebrated for the first time on 24 December 1933 as the "Day of the mother and the child" (''Giornata della madre e del fanciullo''). It was instituted by the [[:it:ONMI|Opera nazionale maternità e infanzia]] in order to publicly reward the most prolific Italian women every year.<ref>{{cite book|last1=de Ceglia| first1= F.
