As of 2018, a number of [[Rail freight transport|freight railroads]] were operating in Massachusetts, with Class I railroad [[CSX Transportation|CSX]] being the largest carrier, and another Class 1, [[Norfolk Southern]] serving the state via its [[Pan Am Southern]] joint partnership.
