Because of the high death toll and widespread property destruction along the U.S. Gulf Coast, the name Katrina was retired from the [[Atlantic hurricane naming lists]] in April 2006 by the [[World Meteorological Organization]]. The name will never again be used for another tropical cyclone in the Atlantic basin.
