The federal government is the largest employer in the Kansas City metro area, with more than 146 agencies. Agriculture companies include [[Dairy Farmers of America]], the largest dairy co-op in the United States. The [[National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics]] and The [[National Association of Basketball Coaches]] are based in Kansas City.

The Kansas City [[Federal Reserve Bank]] opened a new building in 2008 near Union Station. Missouri is the only state to have two of the 12 [[Federal Reserve Bank]] headquarters, with the second in St. Louis. Kansas City's effort to get the bank was helped by former mayor [[James A.
