The government required accurate estimates of the origins of the population as basis for computing [[National Origins Formula]] immigration quotas in the 1920s (i.e. how much of the annual immigrant quota would be allotted to the [[Irish Free State]], as opposed to [[Northern Ireland]] which remained part of the [[United Kingdom]]).
